1. DESCRIPTION OF JEWEL.

 Sapphire Masonic Lodge No. 561 Past Master's Jewel

  OBVERSE OF JEWEL

A nice quality silver Compass and Square Past Master's neck Jewel.

Sapphire Masonic Lodge No. 561 Past Master's Jewel

The Jewel comprises of a normal silver Compass and Square, with a suspended gold "G".

At the apex of the compasses is a Sapphire and the handle of the Square is engraved with four  shamrocks, and the Compass with five on the left leg, and four on the right, totaling fifteen.

The jewel itself is suspended from a silver pendant, the centre of which is blue enamel with a hand and Trowel, a Masonic  symbol widely used in Irish Freemasonry and was taken from the Coat of Arms of Operative Stonemasons, and the number of the Lodge "561" below. On the circumference of the pendant is the name of the Lodge "Sapphire Masonic Lodge Dublin" in white enamel.

The engraving is of the highest quality.

2.  SHORT HISTORY OF WARRANT      No. 561.  

 

Warrant No 561 issued to brethren in CORONERY (Irish Masonic Records - Philip Crossle- shows CORRINARY), Cootehill, Co. Cavan, 5 November 1778.

Warrant No. 561 was sent in by Bro. James G. Adams of No. 796 on the  22nd October 1855.

3.  HISTORY OF SAPPHIRE        LODGE No. 561.  

 

 The Minutes of the Grand Lodge Board of General Purposes dated 4th June 1923 show concerning Warrant No. 561-

"4 June, 1923 - Read Memorial from various Brethren praying for a warrant to establish a Lodge in Dublin in the County of Dublin to be called the Sapphire [Warrant No. 561]. – Recommended"

The Recommendation of The Board was followed,as is shown in the Grand Lodge Minutes of 7th June 1923 as "Confirmed

Warrant No. 561 reissued to `Sapphire Lodge' in Freemasons Hall, MOLESWORTH STREET, DUBLIN on the 8th June 1923.

Series five Vol. 19 shown as Vol. 4 of the extant Grand Lodge Registers shows -

"Warrant No. 561 to Dublin as “Sapphire Lodge”, 8 June, 1923.Charles M. Harris, Works Manager, 206; William F. Woodworth, Chemist, 206 and Francis O. Meredith, Wine Store Manager, 238, registered along with seven others from various lodges, 8th June, 1923."

The Minutes of the Grand Lodge Board of General Purposes dated 1st December 1924 show concerning Lodge 561-

"1 December, 1924 – Read letter from Lodge No. 561, Dublin submitting design of a Founders Jewel for approval.  Approved."

A total of 75 brethren registered up to 25th March, 1952.  In most cases the dates when the issue of certificates is shown, together with the occupation of the brother.

Series six Vol. 22 of the extant Grand Lodge Register commences with the registration on affiliation of J. J., Motor Trade, (137) registered here 23rd March, 1954.

A total of 34 brethren registered up to 26th October, 1976.  In most cases the dates when the issue of certificates is shown, together with the occupation of the brother.

The Minutes of the Grand Lodge Board of General Purposes dated 9th February 1978 show concerning Warrant No. 561-

"9 Feb., 1978 – The Board noted with regret and reported to Grand Lodge the return of Warrant of Lodge No. 561 Dublin."

The Grand Lodge Minutes of 2nd March 1978 regarding Warrant No. 561 show - "Confirmed"
