1. DESCRIPTION OF JEWEL.

 

Belfast Volunteer Masonic Lodge No. 439

  OBVERSE OF JEWEL

A silver Past Master's neck Jewel suspended from a crest.

Belfast Volunteer Masonic Lodge No. 439

The crest takes the form of a silver star with a crown on top. Centred on the star is a circle with the name of the Lodge, "Belfast Volunteers Masonic Lodge" and in the centre of the circle a shamrock with the number of the Lodge, "439", thereon.

The Compass and Square is a standard silver Past Master's Jewel with a fixed "G".

  The reverse of the Jewel bears the inscription :

"W.H. Hunter

 W.M. 1968

The Maker's Mark on the reverse of Jewel is "H&R"

2.  SHORT HISTORY OF WARRANT      No. 439.  

 

Warrant No. 439 issued to brethren in CLONES, Co. Monaghan on the 6th June 1765. Warrant No. 439 was Cancelled on the 6th January 1814.

Warrant No. 439 reissued to `North Star Lodge' in BALLARAT, Victoria, Australia on the 19th October 1863. Warrant No. 439 was sent in to Grand Lodge & received on the 6th May 1869, the brethren of No. 439 joining No. 427.

3. HISTORY OF BELFAST        VOLUNTEERS LODGE No. 439.  

 

The Minutes of the Grand Lodge Board of General Purposes dated 4th March 1918 show concerning Warrant No. 439 -

"4 March, 1918 - Read Memorial from Bros. Thompson, Gillmour, Ervine and 23 others praying for a warrant to establish a Lodge in Belfast in the County of Antrim to be called the Volunteers.  Recommended by Lodges 274, 106, 345 and by the D.P.G.M. of Antrim. – Recommended"

The Recommendation of The Board was followed,as is shown in the Grand Lodge Minutes of 7th March 1918 as "Confirmed".

Warrant No. 439 reissued to `Belfast Volunteers Lodge' in 16, DONEGAL SQUARE SOUTH, BELFAST on the 11th March 1918.

Series four Vol. 16 shown as Volume 4a of the extant Grand Lodge Registers shows -

"Warrant No. 439 to Belfast as “Belfast Volunteers Lodge”, 14 March, 1918 - J. Pim Thompson, Stock-broker (7); John Walter Gillmour, Publisher (418) and Robert Ervine, Engineers Representative (207) registered along with twenty-three others from various lodges, 14 March, 1918"

"Irish Freemasonry in 1918.

"....The numbers have greatly increased since these figures were given, as within 1918 seven new warrants have been granted establishing the following new lodges:-

......"The Volunteer", No. 439......"

 

A total of 89 brethren registered up to 4th July 1923.  In most cases the dates when the issue of certificates is shown, together with the occupation of the brother.

Series five Vol. 19 shown as Vol. 3 of the extant Grand Lodge Register commences with the registration on affiliation of John H. Pemberton, Tobacconist, 126, registered here 8th February, 1924.

Series six Vol. 22 of the extant Grand Lodge Register commences with the registration on affiliation of William Lee, Confectioner (49) registered here 14th March 1952.

A total of 116 brethren registered up to 9th May 1952. In most cases the dates when the issue of certificates is shown, together with the occupation of the brother.

Warrant No. 439 was removed to Freemasons' Hall, ROSEMARY STREET, BELFAST in 1956.

A total of 96 brethren registered up to 13th April 1984.  In most cases the dates when the issue of certificates is shown, together with the occupation of the brother.

From 1984 the registration of members of BELFAST VOLUNTEERS LODGE No. 560 is held, in alphabetical order, in a computerised register by Grand Lodge, Freemasons’ Hall, 17 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2.  The Registration of the Worshipful Master, Wardens and Secretary of Lodges are held in separate Registers, the first Volume covering the period 1983 to 1994 inclusive and the second Volume covering from 1995 to date.
