1. DESCRIPTION OF JEWEL.

 OBVERSE OF JEWEL

An ornate gold Jewel suspended from a white ribbon by two gold bars.

The top and bottom bars have inscriped the ordinal latin number "Septimus Decimus", which means "seventeenth", to indicate that the holder of the jewel was the seventeenth Worshipful Master (1920), the Lodge having been founded in 1903.

The Jewel comprises of a very nice gold plaque with a Compass and Square mounted on a sky blue oval disc.

The name of the Lodge, "Killarney Lodge", is engraved on the circumference of the Plaque.

At the top of the plaque is a celtic design and on the bottom, an Irish Harp, surrounded by shamrocks.

  The reverse of the Jewel bears the inscription :

2.  SHORT HISTORY OF WARRANT      No. 360.  

 

Warrant No. 360 issued to brethren in MULLINGAR, Co. Westmeath on the 4th December 1760. Warrant No. 360 was cancelled by Order of Grand Lodge on the 7th October 1813.

Warrant No. 360 was reissued to brethren in STAFFORDSTOWN, Randalstown, Co. Antrim on the 5th January 1826 and was cancelled on the 1st October 1846.

Warrant No. 360 was reissued to `The Mersey Lodge' in FORMBY, (now known as Devonport) in Tasmania, Australia by dispensation in 1885 and by Warrant on the 1st July 1886. Working in 1889, but became dormant. [Subsequently the Mersey Lodge was issued with a renewed Charter No. 21 from the Grand Lodge of Tasmania.]

3.  HISTORY OF KILLARNEY        LODGE No. 360.  

 

The Minutes of the Grand Lodge Board of General Purposes dated 28th September 1903 show concerning Warrant No. 360 -

"28 September, 1903 - Read a Memorial from Bros. Willoughley, Thompson, Dawson and twenty-seven others for a Warrant to establish a Lodge in Cape Town, Cape Colony, to be called “Killarney”.  Recommended by Lodges 199 Capetown.  Recommended."

The Recommendation of The Board was followed,as is shown in the Grand Lodge Minutes of 1st October 1903 as "Confirmed".

Warrant No. 360 reissued to `Killarney Lodge' in CAPE TOWN, South Africa  on the 3rd October 1903.

Series four Vol. 14 of the extant Grand Lodge Registers shows -

"Warrant No. 360 to Cape Town, South Africa as “Killarney Lodge”- Gerald Wellinghby, Clerk in Holy Orders (SC); Joseph G. Thompson, Salesman (199) and William M. Dawson, Accountant (447) registered along with 36 others from various lodges and constitutions 3 October, 1903"

The Minutes of the Grand Lodge Board of General Purposes dated 3rd June 1907 show concerning Lodge No. 360 -

"3 June, 1907 – Read application from Lodge 360, Capetown for permission to meet in new premises.  Granted on condition that the premises in question are already used for Masonic meetings."

There is no entry for the 1914 -18 War.

A total of 186 brethren registered up to 19th March 1923.  In most cases the dates when the issue of certificates is shown, together with the occupation of the brother.

Series five Vol. 19 shown as Vol. 3 of the extant Grand Lodge Register commences with the registration of William Bell, Station Master, registered 1st May 1923.

A total of 136 brethren registered up to 21 April, 1953.  In most cases the dates when the issue of certificates is shown, together with the occupation of the brother.

"......Lodges and their Districts.

In view of the notable event in the history of Masonry under the Irish Constitution in South Africa, it is not out of place here to give the component lodges of the various Masonic Provinces. These are .....129, 360 and 368, Capetown....."

Series six Vol. 22 of the extant Grand Lodge Register commences with the registration of on affiliation John H. Hudson, Motor Fitter (4279 EC) registered here 2nd September 1952.

A total of 73 brethren registered up to 5th October 1982.  In most cases the dates when the issue of certificates is shown, together with the occupation of the brother.

From 1984 the registration of members of KILLARNEY LODGE No. 360 is held, in alphabetical order, in a computerised register by Grand Lodge, Freemasons’ Hall, 17 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2.  The Registration of the Worshipful Master, Wardens and Secretary of Lodges are held in separate Registers, the first Volume covering the period 1983 to 1994 inclusive and the second Volume covering from 1995 to date.
