         3. ROYAL ARCH SEALS OF OF                  "LODGE" AND CHAPTER                                   NO. 623.

Armagh Royal Arch Lodge No. 623 Smoke Seal

This is a smoke seal of Royal arch Lodge No. 623. Whereas the above Jewel postdates the Chapter joining the Supreme Grand Chapter as late as 1845, it is clear from the Jewel and the above smoke seal that the Royal Arch Degree was being worked under the "sanction" of Lodge No. 623 prior to the formation of the Supreme Grand Chapter in 1829. This is supported by Minutes of Lodge No. 623 of 29th July 1801 which state:-

"Lodge met on the business of the Royal Arch no business being done the Lodge proceeded to give James Kirwan the Degree of an Entred Apprentice and Fellow Craft. Lodge closed in Harmony."

you will note that the design of the smoke seal is identical to the design on the obverse of the Jewel.

Armagh Royal Arch Chapter No. 623 Smoke Seal

Smoke seal of Royal arch Chapter No. 623.

This seal was used when the Chapter was clearly separated from the Craft Lodge. You will note that Euclid's 47th Propositon has been replaced by a Compass and Square over an altar.
