Derry Coat of Arms.jpg

Derry Coat of Arms

The famous skeleton on the city's coat-of-arms is said to depict the association with another aristocratic family, the Norman de Burgos, who built their great fortress at Greencastle at the entrance to Lough Foyle. They briefly owned part of Derry in the early fourteenth century and may well have been planning to build a new town there. Instead, the settlement declined in significance. When the local O'Doherty family built a castle in Derry for their overlords the O'Donnells, probably around 1500, it may well have been thought that a new beginning was about to be made. The recently-built O'Doherty Tower is a modern attempt to commemorate that medieval association.

82nd  FOOT, THE PRINCE OF WALES' VOLUNTEERS

1817 - 1858

The circumstances with regards to the Seton Warrant was that in July 1817 the Provincial Grand Lodge of Munster attempted to revive the erased warrant 224, Cork, to certain brethren of the 82nd Foot, then quartered in Birr, who were members of 163.

Grand Lodge  intervened in this attempt by The P.G.L. of Munster to revive the the Seton Warrant as is shown from the Minutes of Grand Lodge dated 4th December 1817 concerning Warrant No. 138 when Grand Lodge insisted on their taking out a regular warrant, namely Warrant No. 138.

The motto of the Regiment was Ich Dien (I Serve). The senior component that went to form the South Lancashire Regiment was the 40th Foot (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot. (PG)
